Active Morning

The birds were active below the dams in the morning. At least 300 pelicans were below Barkley Dam. Wave after wave of cormorants kept flying in to theĀ  tailwaters as well. Black Vultures circled high and low over the water. A small group of Bonapartes gulls were mingled with the Ring Billed Gulls as well. At the eagles nest the female was feeding young. They are still to small to see below the edge of the nest. The male brought in a Coot, an eagle delight. So far since the eaglets have hatched the eagles have brought fish, turtle, and coot to the nest to add to the eaglets diet. The male eagle flew down and landed not far from me and drank from a puddle in the grass. The grass to high to catch the drinking as it masked the birds head. I am guessing the eagle flew a long way with the coot to return to the nest and was hot. They don’t often drink from the puddles at the nest sight but do on occasion. This was the first chance I have had to capture it. The wind blew hard all day. The forecast is for rain chances each day for the next week. Might be a tough week to capture much. Just as well as I have doctors appointment Monday. Then will travel to visit the grandkids and returning shortly on Friday. Have a great weekend…

  1. Huh, I wonder how I missed this last night??? Oh well, better late than never I guess.
It looks like that eagle got into something gooey and got it all over its beak. I wonder if its pine pitch. That sure is sticky enough.
Great shot of the landing cormorant. I didn’t know they used their tail like that!

      New Hampshire Gardener,
The eagle ate some of that coot before it brought it to the nest would be my guess. Thank You and it is neat how the cormorants use their tails.
